Sativa Shakes are a relatively new company to the ‘protein market’ but they have seriously got things right! The Viva High Protein shakes are a blend of plant proteins: pea, soy, hemp and brown rice protein and are flavoured with stevia; a natural sweetener (check out my blog about sweeteners for more info).
Viva High Pro come in two different flavours; Chocolate & Caramel and Strawberry & Banana and they are both *delicious* !! They taste AMAZING with milk (almond milk or KoKo dairy free if you’re vegan) and even more delicious in a shake (check out my Mocha Protein Shake recipe) and in chocolate waffles (check out my High Protein Chocolate Waffle recipe) – I used the chocolate & caramel flavour in the mocha shake and chocolate waffles (obviously!) but the strawberry & banana flavour would go perfectly in my Banana Protein Bars or my 3 ingredient protein cookies.. as well as my *super fruity* strawberry & banana protein smoothie which is perfect for either before or after a work-out!
The Viva High Pro are:
- High in Protein (21-22g per 30g serving)
- Complete in their Amino Acid Profile – they contain essential amino acids that our body cannot produce
- Low Carb (1-2g per 30 serving – of which sugars 0.4g)
- Low in Fat (1g per 30g serving)
- High in Fibre (1-2g per 30 serving) – for healthy digestion
- Dairy & Lactose Free
- Gluten Free
- Suitable for Vegetarians & Vegans
- Low Calorie (105-6 Kcal per 30g serving)
Sativa also produce Viva Sativa – 100% hemp protein shakes which come in two different flavours; Kiwi & Lime and Toffee. These too contain a complete amino acid profile as well as both soluble and insoluble fibre, omegas 3, 6 & 9, and no artificial sweeteners. Hemp protein does have an acquired taste though and I for one am not too keen (sorry Sativa – I’ll be sticking with your High Protein blends!!).. but if you like hemp protein then no doubt you will like these. Sativa recommend that you mix the powders with either water or a vegan milk (such as almond milk) and they contain; 130Kcal, 13.7g protein, 4.5g carb, 3.7g fat and a whopping 6g fibre per 30 serving.
Available in the Sativa range are the Viva High Pro or Viva Sativa in:
- 900g Protein Pouches (30 servings)
- Single Serving Sachets (handy when you’re travelling)
- Shake ‘n’ Takes (convenient bottles with 30g of protein powder – just add water or milk & shake!)
- Shakers (love the design!)
Protein helps us to feel fuller for longer, which is why having an adequate intake of protein is essential for weight loss and weight maintenance. Protein is also needed for muscle growth and repair. On a daily basis, a non-active individual will need around 0.8-1g of protein per Kg of body weight a day. This increases to 1.2-1.7g per Kg of body weight a day for strength athletes (or for those who are trying to increase their lean muscle mass) and 1.2-1.4g per Kg of body weight for endurance athletes. To find out more about protein check out my videos on protein: Part 1 & Part 2 – and yes I used to have blond hair (!),
