Protein Cake.. made in a mug? Yes, it’s true!
This is the perfect post-workout treat and it takes literally minutes to make!
This Protein Mug Cake is the balance of carbs and protein to replenish energy stores and help to rebuild muscle.. and did I mention that it also tastes incredible?! Adding the coffee part is completely optional.. you could add cocoa powder, vanilla, sweetener or just keep the recipe simple and leave it out!
P.S you don’t have to work-out to enjoy this ‘healthy cake’ – it makes the perfect snack any time of day.. I’ve even had it for breakfast!
Protein Coffee Mug Cake
- 25g rolled oats or oat flour
- ~30g/1 scoop protein powder
- 1 tsp coffee granules - optional
- 90ml (1/3 cup + 1 tsp) milk or milk alternative
- Mix all the ingredients in a deep bowl or mug
- Microwave for 2 minutes (if the mixture rises after 1-1.5 minutes just push it back down!)
- Eat straight from the mug or tip onto a plate (allow to cool slightly & loosen the edges first before tipping it out) and enjoy with a dollop of yoghurt mixed with white hot chocolate powder (my choice!)

Just had this for breakfast! Eaten straight from the mug felt like I was having a naughty breakfast!!
Very filling! More recipes like this please! X
Hi Rach! Thanks for your comment- I’m planning on making ‘protein balls’ soon so hopefully they’ll be up your street too!!
Easy and simple to do, plus it tastes delious! What more could you ask for. This is something I will definetly be making again (:
Thanks for your comment April – so glad to hear that you liked it! Nic x
Sorry to seem daft. Do you make instant coffee and take a tsp from that – you don’t just use the granules?
Hey! Yes it’s a tsp of coffee granules.. I should have been more clear so sorry! x
I don’t own a microwave. Is there an alternative way to cook it? Thanks.
Hi! You could try baking it in the oven at 180-200 degrees C for 10-15 mins or you could try heating it on the hob – let me know how it goes!
Had for breakfast this morning and used chocolate protein powder. Perfect with natural yoghurt and really filling. I think I may reduce quantities next time or even keep some back for a snack. Thanks for sharing on twitter!
Hi Beth! Aw so glad to hear that you liked it. Thanks for your comment 🙂 Nic x
Absolutely amazing !! Quick, easy & extra yummy…when cooked I put Greek yoghurt & blueberries on top & it was de-lish !! Highly recommendable, and lovely for an afternoon treat with a cuppa 🙂 thanks Nic !!
Ooh that sounds lovely Jo! Thank you so much for your comment! Nic xx
I made this tonight but I used summer fruits protein powder instead… The result… JAM ROLY POLY!! Amazing!! I can’t wait to try this with lots of different flavours!!
THAT SOUNDS INCREDIBLE!!! Thanks for your comment and suggestion- I’ve only ever tried this recipe with vanilla or chocolate protein powder so must experiment! Nic x
Yum just made with choc protein served with Greek yoghurt and strawberries saved me from a serious choc craving! It was delicious and made so much that I’m now full thank you so much x
Oooh I love the addition of strawberries!! Thanks for your comment Emma – it’s such a fab filling snack isn’t it!! Nic x
Nic, I had this for BREAKFAST this morning – felt so naughty but it’s not! Tasted absolutely amazing and was ready in minutes. I had it with some quark and berries on the side – amazing recipe and will definitely be becoming a regular on my menu!
It’s great that this tastes better than an unhealthy sugary pudding – I can have it instead of a naughty pudding as well without piling on the pounds 🙂 thanks!
Hi Alice! Aw thank you for your lovely comment! Love your quark topping too! Never thought of it for breakfast, but yes – perfect!! Nic xx
Brilliant recipe! Takes 2 mins to do, can have it as a pick me up if your on low carbs and need a sweet fix! I had it with strawberries, awesome!
Thank you! Couldn’t agree more – love your addition of fruit too, super healthy 🙂
What a great idea.. Made it at work added some raspberries. Amazing.. Really didn’t expect the texture and taste to be so good! Going to try it with strawberry and vanilla protein next,
Aw thanks Mark! Going to upload your fab pic now too! Thank you! xx
Made with choc orange protein powder and skipped the coffee. Used almond milk and was lovely!
I made this super simple recipe for breakfast before my workout this morning and it was fantastic! So quick, easy and super tasty! I used cinnamon instead of coffee for a twist and served it with Total Greek Yoghurt, honey, blueberries and banana. AMAZING! Thanks Nic! xxx
Love your tweak! And your amazing picture 🙂 Thanks Emma! xx
First time i have made this, very impressed. Made with chocolate protein powder, next time I am going to try replacing the coffee with some orange zest 🙂
LOVE your tweak! Thank you for your comment Jane! Nic x
I tried this with a couple of teaspoons of low calorie hot chocolate as I don’t have any protein powder. And I used coconut milk. Tastes delicious but isn’t very solid like some of the pics on here. Do you think it needs the protein powder to make it more cake like?
Yes it does.. Maybe add some xanthan gum (you can find that in the free-from aisle – it’s a vegetarian thickener.. just add a small amount though!) x
If you’re careful with the amount of liquid, this is also a great way to make a big bowl of cake-y porridge to enjoy in the morning. As long as it’s got the protein powder and enough oats, it seems to work made with espresso, soy milk, or water, and even when there are lots of sultanas, almonds and other tasty stuff in there. This recipe was a great find, as I never realised oats + protein powder would do this!
That’s great to know! Thank you for your comment 🙂 x
Mine didn’t get solid, it was more like just warm cake batter. What could have gone wrong?
Hmmm, too much liquid or not long enough in the microwave? x
