Chocolate Chickpea Protein Brownies

Chocolate Chickpea Protein Brownies

There seems to be a lot of love for my (sweet potato) protein brownies but not everybody liked the idea of sweet potato in a brownie.. so, listening to demand here is a new chocolate protein brownie recipe, minus the potato (and replaced with another secret ingredient.. chickpeas!!).

Chickpeas are a great source of both protein (19g/100g) and fibre (17g/100g) and provide our bodies with iron, magnesium and vitamin B6.

These chickpea protein bars are the perfect pre/post workout snack and would taste delicious with flaked almonds on top or even a teaspoon or two of coffee added to the mix!

Chocolate Chickpea Protein Brownies

Ingredients

  • 1 can (240g drained) chickpeas
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 scoop (25-30g) chocolate protein powder*
  • 100g dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 tsp coconut or veg oil
  • 2 heaped tbsp oats
  • 2 tbsp sweetener or 2-3 dates
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Add the chickpeas, egg whites, chocolate protein powder, oats, sweetener or dates, salt and baking powder to a food processor.. whizz until smooth
  2. Melt the oil and dark chocolate chips for a few minutes in a microwavable bowl and add to the food processor then whizz again
  3. Pour in to a small baking tray lined with baking paper and smooth out with a spatula
  4. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes at 175 degrees C until cooked
  5. Slice in to 9-12 slices, allow to cool and enjoy!

Notes

*Or swap for ~1 tbsp cocoa & ~3 tbsp milk powder OR 4 tbsp hot chocolate powder!

Hi, tried these last night and they are yummy! Just wanted to know the sugar content of these brownies though?
I am trying to keep my sugar intake to a minimum 🙂

    Thanks.

Hey! The sugars are just 5g (from natural sources). It’s a low GI food which means that it won’t spike your blood sugars 🙂 Hope this helps! x

Hey! Sorry to hear that, you sure you used all the ingredients in the right quantities? I’ve never heard anything bad before about this recipe (I get lots of feedback on twitter!) .. perhaps the choc sweet pot brownies are more up your street 🙂

Think I will try it again. I did use all the ingredients and followed the recipe as written. As I have been keeping my insulin spikes to a minimum (successfully) I was curious about sugars that occur naturally and their reaction to insulin?

It’s a low GI product but hard to predict what blood glucose levels will do given any exercise that day, other food eaten with it, quantitiy eaten etc.! You may prefer the sweet potato brownies (another low GI product!).

    These were AMAZING!

I only melted half the choc chips & just added the rest to the final mixture so it gave little “puddles” of choc in the finished brownie.

These will be getting made again for sure. So easy to make!

Ooh that sounds amazing! Thank you so much for your great tip Dee! Enjoy 🙂 x

Was considering making these this weekend. Can you use maple syrup or honey in place of sugar?

    • January 9, 2014 / 5:56 pm

Hello! I personally would use stevia or xylitol but you could add honey to taste – just not too much so that the mixture doesn’t become soggy – maybe add slightly more of the oats if using honey! Let me know how it goes 🙂 x

These are amazing!! Totally addicted 🙂 I made the first batch and replaced the sweetener with dates and they were delicious. I had to make another batch yesterday and added a heaped tbsp of PPB and used the dates again instead of sweetener. My kids love them! Thank you for the recipe 🙂 xx

Hey, I really struggles to blend the chickpeas what could make this easier? Although it was tough I did eventually manage to make these brownies and they were amazing!

    • June 5, 2014 / 7:33 pm

Aw that’s fab! Perhaps add a touch of hot water to help them blend in the future? x
