Eat Water Zero Calorie Slim Pasta, Rice & Noodles

The key to successful weight loss is cutting down on your daily calorie intake without a) going hungry or b) feeling deprived. I came across Eat Water on twitter (@EatWaterPasta) and was very intrigued (hence this blog post). The Slim Foods range by Eat Water consists of Slim Pasta (spaghetti, fettuccine & penne), Slim Noodles and Slim Rice, and they are made from an Asian vegetable fibre called Moyu (Konjac). The vegetable fibre is unique as it expands in the stomach to give a sense of fullness.

The unique selling point of the Slim Foods is that the range contains virtually no calories, carbohydrates and fat. The calories per 100g in the Slim Foods range is 7.7, however, these calories come from vegetable fibre, and cannot be absorbed by the body. This is in comparison to regular pasta which is typically around 350 calories and 72g of carbs per 100g serving.  As well as being great for those who are trying to lose or maintain their weight loss, the Slim Foods range is ideal for people with diabetes as it contains 0g carbs and it’s also suitable for people with coeliac disease as it’s gluten free (it’s listed with Coeliac UK and Coeliac Society of Ireland database of foods suitable for Coeliacs).

Turkey Pasta

Slim Pasta, Slim Noodles and Slim Rice are packed pre-cooked so you simply heat them up and enjoy with your favourite stir-fry, soup or sauce etc as you would like any other pasta, noodles and rice. The pastas really are similar to regular pasta however I wasn’t so keen on the rice* which reminded me of diced up pasta(!), and they are a little more chewy. A selling point however is that they’re very absorbing, so if you add them to a sauce that is runny, it will absorb a lot of the flavours.

*Since I wrote this blog post Eat Water have produced a new & revised slim rice and it’s a thumbs up from me – it’s much finer and so more ‘rice like’!

Summary: Although we shouldn’t evilize carbs, it can be easy to sometimes over-eat and over-indulge on highly refined, low fibre carbs such as white bread and white pasta (think pizzas and baguettes!). Even if you do make the switch to the wholemeal varieties e.g. granary bread or wholemeal pasta, portion control can still be an issue for some people. Big portions usually equals big calories, where as if you’re increasing the portions of low calorie, high volume foods such as vegetables, salad and fibrous foods (such as the Slim Foods range) then you will be left feeling fuller but with out the added calories.

    Good to hear that they’ve updated the rice, since when I tried the original I also wasn’t a big fan! Look forward to trying the new version.

        I’ve now tried the revised version of the rice and I agree with you that it’s much-improved. Whilst the texture of the products is not like “proper” rice, pasta, noodles etc once you get used to the extra amount of chewing involved (!) I think they’re great. I reckon if I ate them for a couple of weeks I would forget that they were different to the “proper” versions.

    Tried the spaghetti tonight – I’m not sure I’d eat it as spaghetti very often – it felt more like a stir fry style noodle! Taste was fine though, and it’s nice to have the option.
