LARABAR Review

LARABAR Review

I only discovered LARABAR bars few months ago but they’ve been on sale in the US since 2003! They’re similar to nakd bars but are bigger and have more texture to them (the nutty pieces are slightly bigger which means a bigger ‘crunch factor’!).

LARABAR bars are 100% clean and are made with no more than 8 super healthy ingredients per bar. There’s no added sugar, syrup, oil or other ‘nasties’ in site! You could describe the bars as ‘raw’ however because there is no legal definition for what can be labeled as ‘raw’ they chose to take the word off the label. LÄRABAR products are made by a simple process in which fruit, nuts, and spices are ground and mixed together. They are not baked or cooked. LARABAR strive to use simple ingredients, as close to their natural state as possible.  For safety reasons though, some of the nut ingredients are steamed or roasted and some of the juice concentrates are pasteurized.

The ingredients of the Apple Pie LARABAR are: dates, almonds unsweetened apples, walnuts, raisins and cinnamon. That’s it! A 45g bar comes in at: 190 Kcal, 24g carbs, 10g fat (only 1g saturated/bad fat), 4g protein and 5g fibre. The bars are low GI (releases their energy slowly) and they taste AMAZING! They really are healthy food at its best!

LARABAR bars are:

  • GLUTEN FREE: The bars have no gluten-containing ingredients, and the company have manufacturing controls in place to ensure that there is no cross-contamination.
  • KOSHER:  All LÄRABAR products are certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union (symbolized by the “U” within a circle).
  • NUT ALLERGIES:  LARABAR bars in the following flavours contain peanuts: Peanut Butter Cookie, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip.
  • VEGAN/VEGETARIAN:  LÄRABAR bars made entirely from plant-based foods. Although the vast majority of chocolate chips are made with dairy or soy, the guys at LARABAR specifically asked their suppliers to provide chocolate chips which are Vegan (containing no dairy). While no dairy products are used to make their chocolate chips, they are made on a line which also produces chocolate chips made with dairy products.  Due to the potential for cross-contact between the types of chocolate chips made at the facility, the chips they use may contain trace amounts of dairy from those other chips; thus they cannot claim that the chocolate chip flavours are Vegan.

Above: “Apple Pie” Just like Grandma’s but under 200 calories, this Apple Pie provides 1 full serving of fruit and 5 grams of fibre. Not too sweet, and spiced with cinnamon and raisins, Apple Pie also has almonds, walnuts and natural chewy goodness *yum*!

I really do love the LARABAR bars and can’t wait to try more flavours – they are the perfect between meal snack (when a piece of fruit really won’t do!!), or for before a work-out. Have you tried LARABAR before? Do let me know if you liked any other flavours!
