In addition, thanks to the California sunshine, their tasty golden walnuts are incredibly fresh and deliciously pure, all year round (this means no bitterness!).<\/p>\n<p><em>[update: what a turn out, thank you to everyone who came to see my cookery demo, you can see a clip in the comments of this Facebook Post below!]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fnicsnutrition%2Fposts%2F2116350195048639&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"771\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Benefits of Walnuts<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Walnuts are high in unsaturated, heart healthy fats, and are a rich source of plant-based omega-3 fatty acids (known as Alpha-Linolenic Acid or ALA); these are\u00a0<em>essential<\/em> fatty acids as our body cannot make them, meaning we must get them from our diet. They are also a source of fibre with a 30g serving (a handful) providing 1.4g.<\/p>\n<p>Packed full of vitamins and minerals including folate, magnesium, manganese and copper, California walnuts are a great plant-based addition to smoothies, salads and snacks too. Eating more &#8216;plant based&#8217; means bringing plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables and seeds from the sides of our plates to the centre and making them not only present, but the star of the show at meal times.<\/p>\n<p>Plant based diets are\u00a0good for both the planet and our health too as plant-based diets have\u00a0been associated with lower risks of <a href=\"https:\/\/nicsnutrition.com\/best-diet-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">heart disease<\/a>, high blood pressure, <a href=\"https:\/\/nicsnutrition.com\/live-healthy-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>, obesity and various cancers. Jam-packed with yummy ingredients, this snack also makes for a tasty on-the-move snack too; simply decant into a small container or food bag before leaving the house!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">Preparation Time: <span class=\"colour\">15<\/span> mins |\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">Serves: <span class=\"colour\">12<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\"><u><b>You\u2019ll need:<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">2 tbsp <span class=\"colour\">maple syrup\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">1-2 tbsp water<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">\u00bd tsp vanilla extract<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\"><span class=\"colour\">200g<\/span> California walnuts\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">50g <span class=\"colour\">pumpkin<\/span> seeds<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">2 tbsp ground flaxseed<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">50g toasted coconut flakes\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\">130g<span class=\"colour\"> dried apricots (cut into quarters)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"font\"><span class=\"size\"><u><b>Method<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat the oven to 180<b>\u00b0<\/b>c.<\/li>\n<li>In a small bowl, mix together the honey, water and vanilla extract.<\/li>\n<li>Into a separate mixing bowl, place the California walnuts, pumpkin seeds and ground flaxseed.<\/li>\n<li>Pour the maple syrup mixture over and toss to evenly coat.<\/li>\n<li>Place the walnut mix onto a lined baking tray in a single layer and toast in the oven for 10-12 minutes (rotating the tray 1\/2 way through cooking), or until golden brown and fragrant.<\/li>\n<li>Set aside to cool, then mix with the toasted coconut flakes and dried apricot pieces.
