Kale Crisps Recipe

Kale crisps are super simple to make and they taste like “healthy crisps” – my friend’s words, not mine! Kale crisps take on the topping flavours so you can customise them to your taste preference.. so far I’ve made them with salt, paprika and nutritional yeast (see recipe below!) as well as salt & cinnamon and salt & nutmeg. I’ve also made the crisps with both pouring oil and 1 calorie spray oil but prefer the former!

 

100g of Kale comes in at just 49 calories and it is PACKED with plant goodness, which means you can eat these ‘crisps’ guilt free :) .

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch of kale*
  • 1-2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 tbsp nutritional yeast**
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt

*Don’t buy bagged kale as the leaves are pre-chopped too finely. I bought my kale bunch for £1 in Morrison’s ‘fresh section’!

**Nutritional yeast is packed with B vitamins & is a vegan-acceptable way of adding a cheesy taste to foods. It’s also low in calories and makes a great addition to most meals! I bought mine from Amazon.

 

 

 

Kale Crisps

 

Method

Step 1

Pre-heat your oven to 150 degrees C. Wash & dry the kale thoroughly.

Step 2

Pull the kale leaves from the stems to make bite-sized pieces and place in a bowl.

Step 3

Mix together your toppings (oil & spices) before pouring over the kale pieces. Massage the kale so that all of the leaves are coated. Make sure to use all of the kale so that the leaves don't end up 'soggy'.

Step 4

Spread the kale leaves out on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 12 minutes until crispy (optional - turn over half way through cooking).

Step 5

Eat & enjoy!

 

P.S  if you have a dehydrator (I have a Tribest Sedona - check out my raw-food dehydrator review for more information!), dehydrate the kale at 135 degrees F/57 degrees C for 3-4 hours until crispy. The leaves remain much brighter/greener than when baked – check out [this post] for pictures!

    Hi Nichola!

    Thanks for this recipe – that’s my picture up there! These were awesome. Such a good way to enjoy Kale – not only in flavour but in texture, too. Excellent way to mix it up and add some variety as kale (and veg in general) can more often than not get pretty boring!

    Mmm I love kale crisps! Unfortunately Morrisons here only sell the pre-chopped kale and I haven’t found it anywhere else. Will have a look in Spain today tho :)

    Thank you Nicola for this wonderful adaptation to what I like to think of as crisps or seaweed. Surprisingly tasty I added sea salt and paprika with my kale, I am a serious muncher when it comes to crisps so this was fab for me for a healthy snack that I tricked myself into thinking was something like seaweed which I love and is a naughty treat!

    So I am WOWed and I urge everyone to try it! Please can we have some more recipes for snack ideas like this please that includes veg of some kind. Xx

    Hey, how many calories are in these per serving? And also how long do they take before they aren’t fresh enough to eat anymore?

      Hello! It depends on what toppings you use :) I would use myfitnesspal to work it out! Kale is 49 kcal/100g x

    Made some kale crisps this morning. And
    Myself and daughter made short work of them.
    I usually buy them for a wee treat occasionally as
    They’re quite expensive. Great to be able to enjoy
    Kale crisps more often. Adding cinnamon or nutmeg
    Sounds yum! Great recipe & easy to make.
