The Sorted Food boys and Lea and Perrins (makers of the original Worcestershire Sauce) have collaborated to produce an ‘Ultimate Cheese on Toast’ recipe (scroll down for the video!), and now Lea and Perrins have challenged me to make a healthier version!

I worked out that their ultimate cheese on toast recipe (using 2 pieces of bread) comes in at a whopping 400 calories and my version, still using 2 pieces of bread comes in at only 230 calories.. and it tastes like PIZZA thanks to a cheeky ingredient PLUS it contains at least 1 of your 5 a day!

Cheese on toast makes an ideal ‘hot breakfast’ or pre/post work-out snack thanks to the perfect balance of carbs and protein (see right for the nutritional information).

Do let me know if you make it too!

Ingredients

  • 2 slices wholemeal/granary bread*
  • 1-2 tbsp tomato puree
  • 30-40g light cheese, grated**
  • 5 cherry tomatoes, thinly sliced***
  • a few drops of Worcestershire Sauce****

*I used Hovis Nimble Wholemeal Bread which comes in at only 51 calories a slice!

**Grating cheese makes a little go a long way! I used Cathedral City Lighter which has 30% less fat than their standard cheese.

***Packed with vitamins, minerals & antioxidants. You could swap the cherry tomatoes for baby mushrooms, sliced.

****Worcestershire Sauce is a flavour enhancing sauce made mainly from vinegar. It adds such a lovely rich taste and you only need a little to taste it!

Healthy cheese on toast

Method

Step 1

Place the bread under a medium-hot grill until toasted on one side.

Step 2

Take out the bread and flip it over to the non-toasted side. Squeeze out the tomato puree in lines over the bread before topping it with the cherry tomato or mushroom slices.

Step 3

Sprinkle over the grated cheese & season with black pepper (optional).

Step 4

Grill for 2 minutes or until the cheese starts to melt before adding a sprinkling/a few drops of Worcestershire Sauce onto the cheese. Grill for a further 2 minutes or until the cheese has fully melted.

Step 5

Enjoy your healthy 'pizza style cheese on toast' for breakfast or as a snack!

It looks yummy but Worcestershire sauce is not vegetarian – it has anchovies in it (unless they have changed the recipe in which case I’ll be very happy!) There is a similar sauce called Hendersons that is veggie. Still ‘meat free’ though!
